Epiphone EJ 200SCE Review

Epiphone has captured the essence of the famous Gibson J200 body style with their EJ200-SCE model.    The EJ200-SCE (view on Amazon) provides the full sound associated with a jumbo body style, easy access above the 12th fret and build in electronics for plugging in when needed.   Like many of the Epiphone guitars they capture the look and feel of the more expensive Gibson models at a fraction of the cost.  This particular model is a jumbo style guitar, if you are looking for guidance on the different types of guitars before deciding, you might want to check out our types of guitars page.  If you already know you want the jumbo body shape  read on!

Epiphone EJ200-SCE Features

Body Shape -  Jumbo.   Perfect for delivering huge bottom end tone and full volume.

Finish -  Comes in 3 color styles, Black,  Natural, and Sunburst.

Solid Sitka Spruce Top -  Sitka spruce is a popular choice for most quality guitars as it provides a sweet, slightly bright tone.

Back and Sides -  Select maple laminate.  As with most laminates, they are durable and less susceptible to climate changes.

Nut and Saddle -   Both made from PVC providing a nice tone for an entry level guitar.

Tuners - The Ephiphone EJ200-SCE comes with Gold Grover Tuners.

Neck - Made from Hard Maple and comes with a tapered  "D" shape that is easy to play.  The fingerboard has the beautiful "Crown" inlays that show really well on the guitar.

Adjustable Truss Rod -  Allows you to adjust the neck bow to set the action of your guitars strings.

On Board Electronics -  Comes with both the under saddle and fingerboard pickups and a pre-amp mounted on the top bout of the guitar.   This is very useful for blending the tone until you get just the right sound through the amp.

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Cost is significantly less than the Gibson Model
  • Comes with pre-amp and two types of pickups (neck & bridge)
  • Cutaway design allows for easy access to the upper frets
  • Tone is not as rich as the more expensive Gibson model.

Should you buy the Epiphone EJ200-SCE?

This is a great guitar if your looking for a jumbo style guitar and don't want to spend thousands of dollars on one guitar.   As with most of the Epiphone entry models you will find the tone to be a little less than the Gibson models,  how ever it is negligible given the significant difference in price.  This alone makes the EJ200-SCE a tremendous value.  The inclusion of the Shadow's Nanomag pickup in the neck and and  nanoflex pickup in the bridge are a nice touch giving you tonal options using the pre-amp to blend the two pickups.  For me this is a beautiful guitar and that coupled with all the features Epiphone has built into the guitar make it a difficult guitar to pass up.
